1000’s attend concert-protest in Serbia – Information – telegram.com
BELGRADE, Serbia – Several thousand people have protested the cancellation of a popular singers’ concert in Serbia, allegedly because of its support for a liberal opposition candidate ahead of next month’s presidential election.
Vlado Georgiev’s concert in the city of Smederevo in central Serbia was supposed to take place in the city’s sports hall on March 4th, but the local organizers canceled the event. Georgiev said he believed the reason was political.
Serbia’s ruling populists, ahead of the April 2 vote, were accused of stifling dissent in Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic’s opposition to broken opposition candidates.
Georgiev has openly endorsed former public rights defender Sasa Jankovic for the presidency. Georgiev sang his songs at the protest late on Saturday, saying, “Beautiful things shouldn’t be forbidden through (political) opinions.”
The Smederevo municipality has denied that they interfered.
