MERRILLVILLE | Serbian heritage is showcased through food, music and dance this week during the annual three-day festival of the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Sava.
The Serbian Festival is open at church, 9191 Mississippi St., on Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
“It is one of the largest Serbian festivals in the Chicagoland region,” said Mike Ajder, a Church member.
He said the event will have a variety of activities and entertainment, but the main attraction is the traditional Serbian dishes and pastries that can be bought there.
“It’s food based,” Ajder said of Serb Fest.
Cevaps, sarma, raznijice (shish kabob) and grilled lamb are among the menu items, he said. There will also be a cake shop selling palachinke (crepes), strudel and nut rolls.
A golf excursion is offered Friday morning at Summer Tree Golf Club in Crown Point, Ajder said. Check-in for players starts at 10 a.m. and golf starts at 11:30 a.m. The cost to enter is $ 115 per person and $ 440 for a quad. The registration deadline for the golf excursion is today.
Several bands provide musical entertainment throughout the festival. The St. Sava Folklore Group and the Church Children’s Choir will perform several times.
