“The extremely successful era at Bayern is coming to an end. At his personal request, Karl Heinz Rummenigge is stepping down as president on June 30, 2021,” Bayern said in a statement.
The celebrated striker of Bayern and the German national team will thus terminate his cooperation with the club in which he has been in various roles since 1974, and he will be replaced as president by another celebrated player of that club and the national team, Oliver Kahn.
“Strategically, this is a more logical time for this decision. The fiscal year is coming to an end, and a new coaching team is coming. I am leaving satisfied and proud to leave the club in good condition, both in sports and financially and structurally,” Rumenige said.
Rummenigge has been Bayern’s president since 2002, and in that period the club has won 14 of the possible 19 German championship titles and two Champions Leagues.
