Rafael Nadal has doubts whether he will win another Grand Slam in his illustrious tennis career, in which he won 14 Grand Slam trophies. Ranked number 7 in the world, Nadal believes he is nearing 100 percent fitness after finally being free from persistent injuries, but the 29-year-old Spaniard admitted he also had to overcome mental scars in order to to get back to his best.
Nadal struggled to rediscover his competitive side while enduring a year without a major win. While the Spain international is confident that he is nearing his full health, Nadal has confessed that it is uncertain to add another big title to his collection of victories.
“I don’t know if I can win another Grand Slam,” Nadal told Sky Sports. “I don’t know if I can do it … but I can do it.”
According to USA Today’s For The Win’s Chris Chase, Nadal could claim yet another Grand Slam win, but only if the Spaniard regains his confidence to play the best tennis of his career. “Belief is more important to Nadal than it is to most athletes,” Chase wrote. “If Nadal can’t regain some confidence at the Australian Open or the European clay court season he used to dominate, another slam may not be in sight.”
Nadal has not reached the quarter-finals in any Grand Slam tournament this season. The last loss Nadal had was a severe breakdown at this year’s Grand Slam final at the US Open, when he lost a two-set lead in the third round and against Italian Fabio Fognini with 3-6 4-6 6 -4 6-3 lost 6-34.
Nadal is currently in Bangkok with world number 1 Novak Djokovic for a sold out exhibition game dubbed “Back to Thailand”. The event was organized by the local authorities in Thailand to increase confidence in the security of the country following a deadly bomb attack in August that killed 20 people in the heart of the capital.
