Despite being produced in a pandemic, tonight’s Oscars will not work, at least the organizers promise, as a group Zoom call of the film industry cream. Several presenters will be present on the stage, many nominees will be in the theater, with all the necessary measures, testing and the necessary quarantine period.
There will even be a red carpet, although not in the usual format – there will be no journalists or fans on it. And the award will also be specific in that it will be held partly in the Dolby Theater, and partly in the building of the “Union” train station in Los Angeles.
Nominees from other countries, who will join the live program from their countries, will remind us that we are still in a pandemic during the ceremony.
As for the favorites, the biographical drama Mank, about the writer Herman Mankievic, the screenwriter of the cult Citizen Kane, leads in the number of nominations – as many as 10, including the main categories: best film, director, actor.
That the competition is strong is also shown by the fact that this year as many as six works have six nominations each: The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal Sound of Metal) and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Manku will be in the race for the best film to oppose and, in the opinion of many critics, two favorites in that category – the Minari and the Land of the Nomads. In addition to those two films, there are also Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Sound of Metal, The Trial of the Chicago Seven, and The Promising Woman.
That this is a special year for the Oscars is also shown by the number of ladies and the race for the best director. To raise the golden statuette for directing, they have Chloe Zhao for Nomad Land and Emerald Finel for Promising Woman.
They are joined by Thomas Winterberg – Another tour (Print), David Fincher – Mank, Lee Isaac Chang – Minari.
The pandemic Oscars will not have a comedian host on stage, but director Steven Soderbergh is in charge of the production of the entire event, for which he promised that the ceremony would look like a film.
