MY VILLAGE IS BETTER THAN LONDON! Veselinka Beba McLaron changed the English capital with a village close to Fruška gora!
– More than 20 years ago, I left my native Sarajevo and went to work as a clerk in “Jugobanka” in England and finished the Academy of Fine Arts in London, and then postgraduate studies. There I also met my wife Colin and gave birth to sons Daniel and Alexander – a story for “Informer” Veselinka Beba McLaron, who did not interrupt her pedagogical work when she came to the village.
In addition to organic food production and painting, she continues to work online with English-speaking students, preparing them for the entrance exam and master’s studies at the Academy of Fine Arts.
He says that the important decision and turning point in life was mostly influenced by the saturation of the urban way of life in the crowded and busy metropolis. After their stay in Novi Sad, they searched for a long time for a rural environment that would meet their standards and meet the needs of children.
The McLaron search ended in Erdevik, because this village, Beba explains, is just right for them – both plain and mountainous, near the forest and the Fruška gora National Park, and ideal for them because there are two lakes nearby where sons and friends go. on fishing and swimming.

– We found this old house, a real Srem house, adapted it and reconstructed it in the old spirit with a race. We also have a 20-acre garden that we cultivate together with volunteers from all over the world, who come to us through the “Wufing” organization. We have guests from all over the world, Argentina, Russia, Hungary, England, Australia, USA, Japan, Canada who are willing to learn about vegetables, fruit growing, cooking, old crafts, says Beba, whose house is always full of friends and artists. are also celebrities, like Gilet from “Electric Orgasm” who fell in love with Erdevik at first sight.
The house in Živojina Mišića Street in Erdevik delights the visitor immediately upon entering the courtyard full of sculptures, which artists from all over the world and Beba’s friends left as a gift. In addition to the old well, the chatterbox, the house for poultry and dogs, there is also a hotel for birds in colorful colors, a hotel for insects, which is adored by her older son Alexander, and a spiral garden where herbs bloom here in summer. In the rooms equipped with antique wardrobes and cupboards, with woven blankets and rags on the floors, the McLarons are heated on wood and “Smederevo”. The walls are full of baby paintings, landscapes, but also abstractions and nudes.
When they come to McLaron’s, the guests sleep in a spacious renovated attic, and work in an atelier and workshop full of Srem antiques, which Beba received from the villagers.
– A new group of projects I am working on should come soon. We will sow a garden where I grow potatoes, tomatoes, horseradish, chicory, pumpkin, cucumbers, and trade clover for goat cheese. We experiment with herbs, spices, we try to make an ideal cheese, a little sour, more spicy. Everything needs to be known and everything needs to be learned. At first, we planned to stay here for a couple of years, and then go to Australia, but the children are delighted with Erdevik and the rural way of life, says Beba, who connects cultures and breaks down barriers in this Srem village.
