How do I look? Afrika Bambaataa, Musician, age 51 | The Unbiased

I am as old as the moon and the stars and as young as the trees and the lakes. My style comes from looking at what came before me and visiting many places. I’m fanatical about movies: African, European, Vikings, Roman. I got into witchcraft and magic when I saw Bewitched and The Wizard of Oz which shows up in some of my outfits. I dress to reflect the full spectrum of the universe.

I carry everything from culture, from the earth or beyond. The whole planet is my shop. One day I’ll think I’m a warlock so I’m going to hunt wizards or witch shit. Next time, I’m a vampire, so it’ll be more like a character from Blade. I get different vibrations with different moments. When I do a concert, I wear something that has to do with the show. I like dressing up funk style so I’ll be wearing influences from George Clinton or Sly and the Family Stone.

I am a cultural man for everyone. Every country is my home when I go there. Whenever I visit a new place, I walk the streets and hunt for new things. I may never get a chance to go back. So when I have the money, I’ll grab it right away. My necklaces come from everywhere; The Ankh symbol is the original cross from which all religions originate. The African map medallion is just one of many emblems of the Zulu nation.

My t-shirt shows the musical prophet, the great honorable Bob Marley given to us by the Creator. He taught us an important message, humans: Respect Mother Earth, she is a living being. If you don’t respect them, the wrath of nature and the Creator will come against you. Today I wear a t-shirt, but I am also known for my collection of robes. I wear old African robes, Asian robes, European robes.

Indians are the Aboriginal people of America, which explains why I wear the headdress. The real Aborigines of America are the Moors, who also have history all over Europe. When Columbus came to America he knew where he was because he had maps of the Moors who had already been there and lived there. Pedro the Mohr brought him here on the boat. I have headgear and robes from everywhere: I am the secret of every story.
