The historic QE2, permanently docked with Dubai’s Mina Rashid, will be temporarily closed on Thursday as the new coronavirus has dealt a new blow to the emirate’s tourism industry.
The luxury liner, which shines in its old splendor and serves as a tourist destination, will be closed from Thursday noon until September 1st.
A statement announced that the ship and all of its onboard facilities will be unavailable as part of measures to combat the spread of the virus known as Covid-19.
The announcement comes because the UAE has reported a total of 113 infections so far.
“After careful deliberation and deliberation, the management team has decided to close the hotel and all of its facilities in order to advance existing renovation plans in the expected off-season,” the statement said.
“We wish all of our passengers, navigators, fans and partners that they stay safe during this time.”
The closure comes just weeks after the Queen Elizabeth 2 embarked on a special heritage tour that takes visitors on a journey through the “bridge” – the command room used by the captain to control the ship during his days of service .
Once reserved for access only by senior crew members and VVIPs visiting the ship, the QE2’s bridge is now open to the public for daily tours for the first time since it was launched in 1967.
