The U.S. state of Florida registered 21,683 newly diagnosed patients with Covid-19 on Saturday, the highest number of infected people in a single day since the pandemic began, federal data showed.

This American state, writes the AP, has become the new national epicenter of the virus, and is the fifth in the number of all new cases in the United States.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis opposed mandatory mask wear and vaccination requirements, and under Florida law, limited the ability of local officials to impose measures designed to stop the spread of Covid-19, the U.S. news agency said.

Data from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed today how fast the number of patients in Florida increased – only a day earlier, 17,093 cases were registered.
