After the strike organized by 65 air traffic controllers from Albcontrol, during which all incoming and outgoing flights were blocked on Wednesday, some of the air traffic controllers have returned to work. According to Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku, the inspectors responded to the government’s call. “Albcontrol is now in full normality. The controllers who responded to our call are now doing their job. […] The hostage plan failed, ”said the minister. According to various media reports, air traffic at Tirana International Airport is currently being controlled by Turkish, Greek and Albanian air traffic controllers.
Today, TIA’s planned commercial inbound and outbound flights resumed immediately, meaning the situation has returned to normal. In the meantime, President Meta has officially requested the initiation of examination procedures for the economic, financial and organizational activities of “Albcontrol” as well as for the causes that led to the emergence and deepening of problems there. So far, the head of the inspectors’ union, Armando Fezga, the head of the shift on the day of the strike, Flora Ndreca and the inspector Muhin Mezini, following a decree by the Tirana Public Prosecutor’s Office. According to the inspectors’ attorney, Rezart Kthupi, the allegation of abuse of office applies only to public administration workers and not to a company that is not dependent on the state.
AlbControl’s air traffic controllers stopped working on Wednesday with the motivation to be stressed about the wage cuts and said they were unable to work. According to the government, the strike was a threat to Albania’s national security and politically motivated.
