After a year of bravely facing a vicious disease, anesthesiologist Vladimir Prunić, head of the Admission Service of the General Hospital, testified for “Informer” about the hopelessness in which he and his colleagues found themselves at the beginning of March.
– The first deceased patient in Serbia, Radislav Bokanić (60), was transported from the Kikinda hospital, who lost the battle with the crown after being connected to a respirator at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Novi Sad. He and another Kikinda resident were infected by Branislav Šugić, a neighbor who later passed away.

It was the beginning of facing and fighting an unknown disease that they only heard about in distant China and Italy, thinking that it would never happen to them.
– The first patient in Kikinda, Branislav Šugić, was hospitalized in the Kikinda hospital two days after the confirmation of kovid 19, at the Department of Urology, when a urinary infection was suspected. The next day, when it was suspected that he was infected with the corona, he was transferred in the morning to the Department of Infectious Diseases, where treatment and diagnostics began.

Then the result of the PCR test waited much longer, until late in the evening. At around 10 pm, the result arrived from “Trampoline” from Belgrade that the patient was positive – the anesthesiologist Dr. Vladimir Prunić, the head of the Admission Service of the Kikinda Hospital, who was given the most ungrateful task at the time, recalls.

– That was March 10. I remember well. I arrived at the Infectious Diseases Department. My legs were cut off, they began to shake with fear. For the first time in my life, I put on a spacesuit, put thick gloves on my hands left over from Ebola, a hat, a visor, two masks, I didn’t know what happened to me. I enter the ambulance where the medical technician Ljubomir Lazičić, who is now retired, and the driver Svetozar Simić were waiting for me.
– We are going on the road to KC Novi Sad, we are transporting the patient in silence. We just looked at each other and saw fear with a rainbow in our eyes – says Dr. Prunić.

– We took the patient to the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Novi Sad, we did it professionally and we tackled the problem. It was already March 11 when we were returning to the Kikinda hospital and the most unusual birthday I spent in an ambulance. The phone was under the spacesuit, they called me to congratulate me, and I was not allowed to answer. In the morning, I came to work regularly to work – this anesthesiologist remembers, now with a smile, the first days of the epidemic.
Lots of fears
When, two days later, on March 12 last year, he was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department of the Kikinda Hospital

– You do not know what you are monitoring, what you are encountering, what is the way of transmitting the infection, whether the protection measures, spacesuits, gloves, masks, are adequate. From the high pressure, I didn’t have a feeling if I had fastened the visor well. Everything was new for us doctors and for all people. We feared for ourselves, for the patient, for colleagues, for our loved ones, parents, brother, his children.

When I was with the first infected patient for the first time, despite having all the protective equipment, I worked, but I did not visit anyone for two weeks. I was also afraid that he would send us to some long place to work. It is easier when working in your institution, than as an aid somewhere – says Dr. Prunić.
Less pressure
Working at the Intensive Care Unit, where he participates with his colleagues in the treatment of the worst patients with kovid, Dr. Prunić states that the pressure is much lower after a year, and that doctors go to the kovid ward with less fear, although they are equally dedicated to patients. infections.
– The fear was the biggest in March and April last year, and now we have just learned to live and work with it. We have treated many patients and cured many. There were, unfortunately, those who passed away. Now our fear is less, we realized that we have adequately used protective equipment to prevent the transmission of the infection.
At the beginning, we did not know how it was transmitted, or how the infection was treated, how the patients behaved. Now, however, it is a little easier – says this anesthesiologist and states that colleagues from the Novi Sad KC Vojvodina contributed to a better organization of work during the covid crisis.

– In March, all covid-positive patients were sent to Novi Sad, and since June, the Kikinda hospital has been included in the treatment of patients – says our interlocutor.
Wine for relaxation
In the rare moments of rest, when the pressure from work is on the verge of mental and physical shooting, and the fatigue is so great that sleep does not go to the eyes, there was a way to relax.
– We had an exhaust valve after work in those first days of the epidemic. Driving a car and a glass of white wine. That’s how we overcame fear and pressure after work. We had to relax a bit in the company – says Dr. Prunić, who kept a smile on his face after all the efforts and the fight with the crown.
