This is another proof that the state graduation exam was rightly postponed, and not only because of the pandemic
According to the original plan, the state matura was supposed to be introduced last school year, but it has been dropped for the second year in a row due to the crown. According to the new plan, the state graduation exam should replace the grand graduation exam in 2023. The trial state graduation exam, however, was held – at the end of October. Judging by the results, it is better that it was postponed as well.
More successful in English than in Serbian ?!
Believe it or not, high school students solved only two of the 20 tasks on the math test and only every third question in the Serbian language, while high school students were even worse, so they answered only one question in math and every fifth question in the Serbian language without a mistake.
Interestingly, the high school students achieved a better result on the test in a foreign language than in their mother tongue, because they correctly solved every other question in the English language.
The best students in Hungarian
Speaking of the mother tongue, the students who attend classes in Hungarian showed the best results, as they solved 65% of the tasks on the test in their language without a mistake.
Almost 40 percent of the correct answers are from history and geography
In general, high school students did not become famous on tests in other subjects either. They had about 39 percent of correct answers from history and geography, then 30 percent of “ticked” solutions from physics, 27 percent from biology, and 24 percent of correct answers from chemistry.
On the other hand, high school students took the written part of the professional exam in addition to the Serbian language and literature. The highest percentage of correct answers from the professional exam had students of medical schools, more precisely, gynecological and obstetric nurses – about 60 percent, followed by nurses – educators (51 percent), pediatric nurses (48), culinary technicians (38) and press technicians (37 percent).
The students who are studying in the field of Electrical Engineering had a unique test, but not the result – they solved exactly one third of the tasks. The weakest result was achieved by (un) tried construction technicians for laboratory research, as they answered only 14% of questions without error.
A total of 4,067 students from 202 schools were tested
By the way, the trial high school graduation included a total of 4,067 students who are currently attending the third grade of high schools and vocational schools. Pilot testing was conducted in 101 high schools, then in 50 high schools, 38 four-year vocational schools, three art schools and ten three-year educational schools.
After all, the most important question is why the results on these tests were so bad, and would high school and high school students be ready for the state graduation exam next year if there was no pandemic?
“In the foreground of the procedure, not the tasks and results”
The director of the First School of Economics, Milibor Saković, who participated in the project of piloting the state matura, believes that the results of the trial testing are not worrying.
– First of all, procedures were tested, not tasks and results. So, first of all, we wanted to check what the commission should do, how tests are separated and shared, how to be on duty during testing, who and how to be on duty… This was necessary to ensure equality of all participants and of course secrecy of tasks when it comes. until the state matura – apostrophe Saković.
As he says, the students and the test results were in the background.
– The students did not have any preparation for this test, although they were informed about it in time. In mine, I warned the students of several classes that the professors would especially evaluate their result on the test, and they did a solid job. On the other hand, the students of the class that I did not motivate in that way almost collectively left the test after half an hour. Also, the tasks on this test are conceived differently in relation to teaching. Therefore, I think that it is better that the state matura is postponed, especially in vocational schools, since it is necessary to adjust to the reformed curriculum – Saković emphasizes and adds that the second trial state graduation exam, at which the students were supposed to be in focus, was planned for this spring, but it was also postponed.
Thorough preparation of both students and teachers is necessary
The president of the Forum of Belgrade Gymnasiums, Aleksandar Markov, is looking for the reasons for the poor results at the probationary exam in the data that 44% of high school students answered that they did not have test tasks during their schooling.
– This shows to what extent the questions from the state matura still differ in relation to those according to the curriculum. That is why the Forum of Belgrade Gymnasiums even earlier asked for the state graduation exam to be postponed until the thorough preparation of both students and teachers for that final exam is carried out. It is not enough to conduct an accelerated two-day teacher training to prepare them for the reformed curriculum – explains Markov.
The state matura exam follows PISA tests
The President of the Forum of Belgrade Gymnasiums, Aleksandar Markov, is looking for the reasons for the catastrophic results at the state matura exam and the insufficient motivation of students.
– They experienced these mock tests as an imposed job through the obligations they have, that is, as something that is not so important. It should be borne in mind that the state matura follows the form of PISA tests that focus on essential knowledge, not memorization. Also, the question is what students have learned in these two years during online classes. All this requires changes in the principles and methods of work in schools, and this requires a much longer period of preparation for both students and teachers. Maybe even an eight-year period – explains Markov.
