This morning, several hundred Serbs from North Mitrovica used a rare opportunity to pay homage to the shadows of their loved ones at the cemetery in South Mitrovica on the day of Mitrovdan commemorations.
However, many failed to find the graves of their ancestors because the monuments were broken beyond recognition, and the graves were overgrown with deep weeds and thorns, reports Kosovo online.
– I have no words to describe all the sadness I feel in my heart. First of all, we can’t come when we want to light candles and visit graves, and even when it allows us to do so for the Eucharist, we are greeted by such a sad sight. Is there anywhere in the world that graves and tombstones bother someone, that the dead bother them. Despite the fact that it is difficult, we will always come as long as possible – said the older lady in a sad voice as she removed the grass and weeds from her late husband’s grave with her hands.
This sad picture that they have found in this place for years, where Serbs were buried until 1999, is most often described with the words sadness, shame, vandalism.
