Detail from the CUP match
The players of Woodville Belgrade were on the verge of a historic feat, as they led 2: 1 until the 67th minute of the game against Adelaide City, and less than half an hour separated them from the placement in the quarterfinals of the FFA Cup in South Australia.
However, the big favorite managed to get up from the knockdown and first equalize, and then in the 83rd minute he dealt a painful blow to the Serbian club and eliminated it from the most massive national competition.
But, when you keep in mind that the rival was the multiple champion of Australia and currently the second-placed team in the Premier League of South Australia, you can take off your hat in front of the Belgrade players and say that they said goodbye to the competition with honor.
In Woodville, they welcomed the former national giant without a shred of fear, with whom the once celebrated coach Zoran Matić and national team member Milan Ivanović won everything that can be won in club football in Australia. Also, the legend of Adelaide City and the current coach of Belgrade, Damien Mori. However, there was no pardon from the home team, so they brought the absolute favorite to the brink of elimination.
Belgrade took the lead in the 12th minute with a goal by Andoni Natsiopoulos, but the guests responded only a minute later. However, when shortly afterwards, in the 20th minute, Kyle Markham brought the Serbian team to the advantage again, it could be sensed that the brave company from Woodville had the strength to reach a sensation.
Belgrade really held up well until the middle of the second half, when the guests managed to reach another equalizer, and seven minutes before the end to a victory.
This evening, Belgrade hosted two more meetings. The juniors of Belgrade unhappily lost to their peers from Adelaide City 1: 0 and were unhappily eliminated from further competition, and Adelaide Cobras defeated Adelaide Victory 4: 0 in the eighth finals of the national cup.
The Belgrade football players now have to fully focus on the championship and try to achieve a big goal that they almost missed last year, and that is placement in the elite Premier League of South Australia. This Saturday, against Adelaide City, they showed that they can deal equally with the strongest teams from the NPL.
