After the “hockey” system was successfully introduced on most tennis courts around the world, it was only a matter of time before the line judges would fall into oblivion.
That moment came, at least on the American continent, since the USTA decided that there would be no line judges at this year’s US Open.
It is certain that the coronavirus pandemic “pushed” such a decision, while the scenario from last year’s Grand Slam in New York will be avoided, when Novak Djokovic hit the Linj referee with the ball and was therefore disqualified from the tournament.
Last year, the technology made decisions on the fields of Flushing Meadows, except at the main stadiums “Arthur Yeshu” and “Louis Armstrong”, and now all the fields will be covered by the “hockey” system.
Also, the USTA announced that seven of the nine tournaments on American soil this year will be played without line judges.
This year’s US Open is on the program from August 30 to September 12.
