The solution to the dispute in Montenegro is on the horizon: Patriarch Porphyry and the archbishops
The regular session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church began with the hierarch’s liturgy in the Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade on Monday – the first chaired by the newly elected Serbian Patriarch Porphyry. The Parliament is the highest legislative body of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and according to the plan, it should last for about ten days.
Serbian hierarchs should consider the current situation in Kosovo and Metohija, but also the Basic Agreement on the Protection of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, which would finally put an end to all previous misunderstandings of the Montenegrin state towards the Serbian church and its property.
According to the announcements, new metropolitans of the Montenegrin-Primorska and Zagreb-Ljubljana metropolitanates should be elected at this Parliament, considering that Metropolitan Amfilohije has passed away, and Metropolitan Porphyry has been elected the new patriarch. Also, after the death of Bishop Milutin, the position of bishop became vacant.
However, church circles state that the election of the new metropolitan of Zagreb-Ljubljana could be postponed and that this duty as administrator will continue to be performed by the 46th Serbian leader.
On the eve of the Assembly, the most serious candidate for the position of the new Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, the current administrator, Bishop Joanikije, said that the holy canons prescribe that any exercise of the diocese be filled within three to six months. New Bishops from the ranks of the most worthy monks from the homeland and the diaspora should also be elected at this Assembly.
