The resultant crisis has led to significant changes in the ranks of the White Eagles. First, the cooperation with coach Wayne O’Sullivan was terminated by mutual agreement, and only a few days later, two valuable reinforcements arrived in Bonirig – defender Nikola Krljar and point guard Anthony Costa.

Having in mind this year’s goal of the club, taking one of the first four places and placement in the First Premier League at the end of the season, the club leaders are fully aware that the team is currently not in a favorable position to achieve that ambition.

Therefore, as a “shock therapy” for the players, a change of coach followed, but while a solution is still being sought for “Sali’s” successor, the decision was made to bring in the necessary reinforcements.

In order to stabilize the last line of the team, which received an unusually large number of goals for the Eagles this season (as many as 16 in ten games), the choice fell on the tall and strong Nikola Krljar, who joined his teammates on Monday.

The young defender is only 23 years old, and after leaving Bonirig in 2019, he spent a season and a half in the Northern Tigers, with whom he reached the NPL 2 NSW final last year. He spent the first part of the current season in the ranks of Blackatun Spartans, also in the same league.

It is about a guy who grew up in the ranks of the White Eagles and knocked on the door of the first team, for which his father Tom used to play. Nikola went through all the younger selections in the red Eagles jersey from the cocks, to the U20 reserve team.

He also had a few trips in the first team, however, when O’Sullivan came to the club two years ago and formed a team, Krljar was not on that list.

In addition to having quality and gaining valuable experience during the previous two seasons, Krljar certainly brings more quality in the form of his sacrifice and sense of belonging to the Serbian community and the club that is his pride.

From an early age, he dreamed of becoming the first team player of Bonirig and he will surely do his best to turn his dreams into reality by playing with his new and old teammates. One thing is for sure, Nikola will “leave his heart on the field” in the jersey of his beloved club.

The second reinforcement is 27-year-old striker Anthony Costa, who comes from the neighboring Marconi, and is an offshoot of the famous football school Adelaide City. He should offer additional variety in the attack, in addition to the previous strikers Eron Peterson and Radovan Pavićević.

Krljar and Kosta will have the opportunity to make their debut this Saturday, when last year’s champion Central Coast Mariners arrives in Bonirig. A real opportunity for the Eagles to show what kind of material they are made of, but also for their fans to fill the stands and be with the team when it is most needed.

Chance of a generation

The White Eagles do not have much time to recover from a series of bad results and a change of coach. They have only 12 games left until the end of the season, and they are seven points behind the currently fourth-placed. Bearing in mind that this season has a special weight because for the first and probably the last time, as many as four teams will qualify for the elite rank, Bonirig has an opportunity that should not be missed.

From next season, all three ranks of the NPL in New South Wales will have 16 clubs each, and it would be a great thing for the Eagles to play with the strongest, where they not only belonged until three years ago, but not so long ago in 2015 were champions.

In contrast, there is another year in the far lower quality NPL 2, which will be further weakened by the entry of four lower-ranked teams, so it will be difficult to find good players for such a league who would be true reinforcements for the Eagles.
