Kosovo Health Minister Arben Vitia said today that Kosovo has rejected Albania’s offer to vaccinate Kosovo’s teachers for the time being because Albania no longer has Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines, only Sinovac vaccines. “Even if we wanted to in Kosovo, the laws prohibit us from importing products that are not approved by the European Medicines Agency. Hence, we did not find it reasonable that our teachers should be vaccinated with vaccines that we ultimately cannot guarantee. Said Minister Vitia. According to Vitia, the Albanian Ministry of Health has confirmed that teachers from Kosovo will be invited to participate in the vaccination process as soon as Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are available again in Albania.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kurti, who was also present at the conference with Kosovo’s Minister of Health, said that the provision of vaccines to Kosovo remains a sensitive issue. “We must remember that the Republic of Kosovo, as it is not recognized by a few countries in the world, among which the two great powers, which are also members of the Security Council, do not have the convenience of getting vaccines from everywhere. Kurti explained.
Kosovo has only received 24,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine through the COVAX mechanism to date. The government announced today that it expects more vaccine doses to arrive in the country soon. During the mutual conference between Kurti and Vitia, further measures against the spread of COVID-19 were put in place, after deaths and hospitalizations increased in recent weeks. The curfew in Kosovo from April 7th to 18th is from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
