The Pfizer / BioNTech coronavirus sting is unrelated to reported post-vaccination deaths and no new side effects, the EU Medicines Agency said on Friday, based on initial data from the vaccine’s launch.
The European Medicines Agency said it looked at the deaths, including a number of elderly people, and “concluded that the data are unrelated to vaccination with Comirnaty (the vaccine) and the cases are not safety concerns raise “.
In its first security update since the EU’s vaccination campaign began in December, the Amsterdam-based EMA stated that the data “is consistent with the known safety profile of the vaccine and no new side effects have been identified”.
Reports of occasional severe allergic reactions did not go beyond what had already been identified about this “known side effect,” he added.
“Comirnaty’s benefits in preventing Covid-19 continue to outweigh any risks and there are no recommended changes in how the vaccine is used,” the EMA said.
The EU watchdog has so far approved two vaccines from Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna. AstraZeneca will issue a third verdict later on Friday.
Several countries, including Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, have reported deaths of people given the Pfizer BioNTech shock but not made direct links to the vaccine.
In Norway in particular, 33 deaths were recorded among elderly people who received their first dose.
Oslo said earlier this month it had not made a link but advised doctors to consider the general health of the most vulnerable before bumping into them.
