Historian Dr. Milan Koljanin points out that the Yugoslav authorities sometimes used illegal methods in the fight against members of the extreme political emigration, among whom were numerous war criminals.
– It was also a fight against terrorism because extreme emigration also fought against Yugoslavia by terrorist methods: planting bombs, hijacking planes, killing diplomatic representatives. In 1967, a member of the Yugoslav security service killed one of the greatest Ustasha criminals, Vjekoslav Maks Luburić, in Spain – Koljanin points out.
According to available data, Luburić was killed on April 20, 1969, in an apartment in Madrid by Ilija Stanić, the son of his dead friend, also an Ustasha, Vinko Stanić. In an interview, Ilija Stanić said that he was recruited by Udba, that he had the code name “Mungos”, and that he planned to kill his godfather (Luburić baptized him in 1942) for about three months.
He stated that he used the opportunity when the then 56-year-old Luburić was abandoned by his wife, and the two of them were left alone in the house.
While he was in the kitchen, Stanic snuck up on him and hit him on the head with a hammer, but he tried to get up. He shouted at him: “Fuck your mother, Ustasha! This is how you killed children in Jasenovac with a hammer! ”, And after that he broke his skull with three more blows. However, Ilija Stanić changed his statements on several occasions, so that it remains a mystery to this day whether he was the executor or someone else.
