Two private hospitals in Athens will join the Greek public health system to relieve overcrowded intensive care units in state hospitals, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said.
“Now that the Athens region is feeling the latest pressure since the beginning of the pandemic, we are implementing our emergency plan, joining forces,” he said, Reuters reports.
Greece has extended the lockdown and intensified restrictive measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus after a sharp jump in the number of patients.
In the last 24 hours, 1,165 new cases and 39 deaths were registered.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, 6,797 people have died from the consequences of the coronavirus in Greece, and the youngest victim is a baby only 37 days old who died yesterday.
