Zairil to woo nature-loving Tanjung Bungah voters
GEORGE TOWN: DAP Tanjung Bungah candidate Zairil Khir Johari said he was ready to compete despite strong support from incumbent MP Teh Yee Cheu, who left the DAP after falling out with the party leadership.
Zairil, the acting MP for Bukit Bendera covering Tanjung Bungah, said he was fully aware of Teh’s supporters and made peace with them long ago.
“I know his followers. All I can say is what happened in the past stays in the past. I hope we can move forward together as a team, ”he said today at his meeting at the Tanjung Bungah DAP Service Center in Tanjong Tokong.
Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow announced Zairil’s candidacy at an earlier event at which the party also named several other candidates, including Prime Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is defending his seat in Air Putih state for a third term becomes.
Teh has announced that it will run for the seat of Sungai Pinang in the May 9 elections under the banner of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
Zairil, who is also Penang’s DAP vice chairman, said he expected a tough race for Tanjung Bungah, which is likely to see a triangle or square match.

He said his focus is on involving the residents’ associations and civil societies that are very active in Tanjung Bungah.
Zairil said he was fully aware of the environmental problems in the area and pledged to help solve them.
“I have engaged the locals as a member of the Bukit Bendera parliament for five years. I am very aware of the local problems.
“I will continue my green agenda of planting more trees and creating more amusement parks,” he said.
Tanjung Bungah State has 20,126 voters on the fourth quarter 2017 electoral roll.
