Former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, claims that the Americans, in the midst of the fighting in Donbas, prepared a plan for the capture of Donetsk.
In an interview with TV “Ukraine 24”, he stated that the former director of the CIA, David Petraeus, called on the authorities in Kiev to launch an offensive on Donetsk and that they even prepared a plan to capture the city.
According to him, Petraeus sent him a text message in which he explained why it was a good time to enter Donetsk.
He adds that the plan was also sent to the then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, but that he did not react.
He himself, as he said, contacted Poroshenko and tried to talk to him about Petraeus’ plan, but the then Ukrainian leader translated the conversation to another topic.
It should be reminded that the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelenski, appointed the former President of Georgia and the former governor of the Odessa region, Mikheil Saakashvili, as the head of the executive board of the National Reform Council.
Saakashvili left Georgia in 2013, immediately after the inauguration of President Georgi Margvelashvili. Several criminal cases have been initiated against him in his homeland, and he was sentenced to imprisonment in absentia due to several charges.
The situation in Donbass
In April 2014, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, which declared independence after the coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Kiev does not recognize DNR and LNR and considers the territories of these two republics occupied and insurgent forces terrorist.
The issue of resolving the situation in Donbas is being discussed, among other things, at the meetings of the contact group in Minsk, which since September 2014 has adopted three documents regulating the steps for de-escalation of the conflict. However, even after the armistice agreement between the conflicting parties, there is still an exchange of fire.
A comprehensive ceasefire in Donbas took effect on July 27 last year. These measures include a complete ban on fire, the deployment of weapons in and near settlements, and offensive and reconnaissance and sabotage operations. In addition, disciplinary liability for ceasefire violations is envisaged. Ceasefire orders containing measures to maintain it must remain in force until the conflict is fully resolved. However, from February 2021, the situation in Donbas started to worsen again.
