The doctors at the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) were able to successfully perform the first endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) procedure.
The interventional procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team of experts from the hospital, headed by Dr. Sharif Khashaba, Consultative Vascular / Endovascular Surgeon, led and led by Dr. Sawsan Kadhem and Dr. Ammar Khamis, Chief Radiology Residents, Dr. Nada AlMansoori, consulting anesthetist, and Dr. Ahmed Abdulbadee, chief anesthetist, on a 62-year-old Bahraini patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
“An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by a weakening and bulging of the lower part of the aorta. If left untreated, the AAA can burst and is almost always fatal, ”says Dr. Khashaba.
“In the past, those in need of AAA repair had major surgery that involved opening the abdomen to insert a graft device.
Most patients today can undergo EVAR, a minimally invasive treatment through a small incision that is also ideal for those who are not good candidates for open surgery.
“This sophisticated procedure can only be performed in state-of-the-art facilities with the required multidisciplinary team and a functioning catheterization laboratory.”
Thanks to the multidisciplinary teamwork of the vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses and health professionals at SMC, the patient was discharged within three days and the post-operative follow-up gave excellent results with no associated complications.
