Passing through one of the streets of Lafayette, Indiana, Nick saw a house on fire and shouted for help. Although the fire engulfed a large part of the house, it did not stop him from running through the front door when he saw 18-year-old Ziona Barrett on the stairs, taking her two younger sisters and a friend with her.
He came to them, and then led them outside. The youngest, six-year-old Kaylani, was still trapped in the house.
Hearing her screams, Nick, who says he was completely terrified by the fire, gathered his courage and ran back into the house.
“When I saw how much smoke there was, I was already halfway up the stairs.” I was very scared, but then I told Kailani. I pulled my shirt over my head and was guided by her voice. I found her and picked her up and carried her up the stairs,” Nick told Fox News.
Unable to go back through the front door because of the fire, he jumped out of the first floor window with Kaylani in his arms and used his body to cushion her fall.
In the footage shared by police, after carrying Kailani out, Nick collapsed to the ground and his first question was, “Is the baby okay?”
Kaylani escaped with a few scratches, but Nick suffered more serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital after receiving first aid. Due to the large amounts of smoke he inhaled, he spent several days in the hospital, but fortunately made a full recovery.
After leaving the hospital, the Barretts welcomed him, and the girls’ father, David Barrett, said Nick had officially become a member of the family.
After the heroic feat, more than $500,000 was raised on GoFundMe alone for Nick’s treatment and to help the Barretts pay for the damage.
