Scholars at the gathering: Aleksandar Veselinović, Jessica Di Bartolo and Amanda Moss with Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller
The famous musician and comedian Dr. Nele Karajlić, the leader of the Sarajevo Surrealists and the singer of the cult group No Smoking, pointed out in a recent interview how much we all lost in the wars of the 1990s.
On that occasion, he emphasized that the genetic talent and versatility of people from the Balkans will improve Australia, Canada, America and other countries around the world in the coming decades, to which our people have been displaced by unfortunate circumstances in the past 30 years.
In support of Nelet’s claim about the talent and potential of our young people who grow up far from the land of their ancestors, there are numerous successes and achievements that children of Serbian origin record here in Australia – be it science, art, sports…
The latest news about another in a series of ranges worthy of the attention and pride of the entire community comes from Liverpool. This Sydney municipality recently recognized the best students living in this part of Sydney and rewarded them with $ 5,000 each.
Among the three Liverpool scholarship holders is our top newspaper Aleksandar Veselinović, who together with his colleagues Jessica di Bartolo and Amanda Moss received the Opportunity Scholarship from the City of Liverpool, as a sign of support for building their future careers.
The award was given to these young people primarily for their top academic performance and involvement in the community. Alexander (23) is a student at the University of Wollongong (UOW) and is studying for a Bachelor of Communication and Media. In addition to his university obligations, Veselinović is also an English language tutor for elementary school students and a martial arts coach.
In a conversation with this versatile young man, who is the pride not only of his family but also of the entire Serbian community, we learned where he comes from, what he does and what he strives for.
– My parents are from Dalmatia, and I was born in Serbia, in Sombor. When I was six, my family moved from Serbia to Liverpool, where we have remained to this day. I finished primary and secondary school there, where I studied computers and informatics, and I also attended the Serbian language school, which was held on Saturdays at Liverpool Girls High School – says Veselinović.
Now you are studying media and communications at UOW, what is all involved in this direction?
– I am in my second year of college, and my main subjects are marketing and social networks. Marketing is especially interesting to me because it is a process that companies use to communicate with potential customers. I also wrote a digital book (e-book) “0-5 km in 5 Weeks”, and I also wrote blogs on the site aleksvfit.com.
On the basis of which criteria did the Liverpool municipality award scholarships?
– The condition was that the candidates live on the territory of Liverpool and that they are students of the local campus of the University of Wollongong. The committee then selected fellows based on college and community achievement. By the way, this is the second time that I received this scholarship, since I was elected last year as well.
The explanation also states that you are involved in a large number of charity campaigns for the local community, as well as that you work as an English teacher in primary school.
– Even as a high school student, I helped younger children at Warwick Farm Public School to master reading English. After a year, I also received a TAFE certificate for a tutor. I was involved in charity campaigns in the 11th and 12th grade, and the goal of the actions was to help the school pay for excursions and graduation celebrations. Also, since last year, I have been volunteering to teach children aged 6 to 12 the skills of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I really enjoy working with children.
What do you want to do when you finish your studies?
– I love sports very much and I am always active. That is why I plan to work as a coach in the long run. As for my professional career, I am interested in marketing and e-commerce, I already have my own online business, and my desire is to do marketing for a sports brand. But, first of all, to successfully finish the faculty, so I will dedicate myself to plans for the future – says Aleksandar Veselinović.
Sport as a way of life
Alexander used to be active in basketball.
– I played for six years at the Red Stars club in Bonirig. Now I am more focused on martial arts and I train Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kick-boxing and boxing at the Kings Academy in Chipping Norton. I also go to the gym several times a week, and occasionally I run and so onI keep fit for all the activities I do. Since whenThere is not much gathering of our people in the pandemic, but in my free time I hang out with several friends who are also Serbs and whom I have known since elementary school – says Veselinović.
