The upcoming poultry factory in Al Ghana will cover up to 55% of rising domestic consumption in Bahrain, said the labor minister.
The new project, which will be implemented on an area of over 500,000 square meters, is being developed in collaboration with the private sector, said Essam Khalaf, Minister of Labor, Local Affairs and Urban Planning.
The minister announced this during a visit to the project site in Al Ghana and added that the government is pumping around 3 million BD into this project as part of a comprehensive plan to ensure food security in Bahrain.
“Bahrain currently produces around 9 million chicks a year through the Delmon Poultry Company,” said the minister.
Production covers about 23% to 26% of market demand. The new facility will increase local production capacity by 11 to 20 million chicks.
“This would cover 50% to 55% of local poultry consumption.”
In 2020, Bahrain imported about 70,000 tons of poultry, 18,000 tons more than in 2019 when the import was 52,000 tons.
“The figures show the steady increase in domestic consumption of poultry meat in Bahrain,” said the minister.
Essam Khalaf attributed the surge to a variety of factors, including the kingdom’s burgeoning food industry.
The Ministry’s Undersecretary of State, Dr. Khaled Ahmed Hassan, the Director of the Animal Control Department, Dr. Ibrahim Youssef, the director of the animal health department, Dr. Fajr Al-Salloum and several ministerial officials accompanied Khalaf.
