More than 60 million Americans across the Pacific Northwest and U.S. Southeast today face temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius and nearly record high temperatures in parts of Idaho and Washington.
Temperatures in Spokane, Washington, could rise to a record 38.9 degrees Celsius today, while Lewiston in Idaho could expect almost a record 42.2 degrees Celsius, said National Weather Service forecaster Bob Oravec.
Record temperatures broke last month in the Northwest Pacific, when a heat wave that killed hundreds of people and paralyzed a region accustomed to moderate summer, where many residents do not have air conditioning.
The cities of Portland and Salem in Oregon and Seattle in Washington set new temperature records above 43.4 degrees Celsius at the end of June.
