There is currently a dispute in the Austrian government between Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Health Minister Wolfgang Mikstein regarding further easing of epidemiological measures.

Regarding the further decline in the incidence, Kurz reminded in the statement that the government is guided by the motto “enable as many freedoms as possible, as many restrictions as necessary” and announced further talks on new concessions in June and July.

Kurz also mentioned the possibility of “removing” protective masks. The Minister of Health reacted to that, criticizing the head of the government and saying that the masks will have to be worn next winter as well.
He says that he is ready to discuss only the abolition of the obligation to wear masks outdoors.

The head of the Kurz’s People’s Party (OVP) parliamentary club, August Weginger, said that Mikstein’s statement could be understood as meaning that citizens should wear masks during the summer as well.

– That course will not be supported by the OVP. It is necessary to feel the needs of the citizens – he said.

Earlier, the Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Kestinger, said that the citizens must be met, since the goal of reducing the number of patients in intensive care, as well as the decreasing number of infected people, has been achieved.

Mikstein is supported by experts such as Armin Fiedler, who believes that the measures should not be further relaxed before July 1, in order to analyze how the concessions affected Austria.
