All countries were the only candidates for election in their regional groups, and they will replace Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam, Reuters reported.
To ensure geographical representation, places for non-permanent members are allocated to regional groups. If there are opponents within the regional groups, a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly is required for election.
Ghana received 185 votes, Gabon 183, and the United Arab Emirates received 179 votes.
Albania was elected with 175 votes, and Brazil with 181 votes.
The Security Council is the only United Nations body that can make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and approving the use of force.
The Security Council, in addition to five permanent members – Great Britain, China, Russia, the USA and France, consists of ten non-permanent members whose mandate lasts for two years.
India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway are also non-permanent members of the Security Council.
