The United States should have acknowledged its failure in Afghanistan earlier, former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev said in an interview with Sputnik.
– It was an unsuccessful endeavor from the very beginning, although Russia supported it in the first phase. As in many similar projects, it was based on exaggeration of danger and not very clear geopolitical intentions. To this should be added unrealistic attempts to democratize a multi-tribal society – he said.
According to Gorbachev, America should have acknowledged the failure earlier, and now it is necessary to learn lessons and not repeat similar mistakes.
Mikhail Gorbachev was the initiator of the withdrawal of the Soviet army from Afghanistan, which ended on February 15, 1989.
