Family in the first place
It is a real art if you managed to use the period of the pandemic in the best possible way, and that is exactly what my interlocutor, Dušan Došen, a native of Belgrade, a mechanical engineer who works at Ford in Melbourne, did.
In the circles of close people known as a musician, Dušan made a “Studio Small Room” in the house and started creating his own music.
– Success in music for me is that the people I appreciate, who are music professionals, such as Nela Trifković, give me compliments on how I play and what kind of music I make. And, through music, I release myself and use it more as a therapy, than to think about some success – Dušan will cheerfully say.
Through laughter, he tells me that he failed to finish lower music school, because he fell out of solfeggio. But that did not discourage him from continuing to play and make music.
On the other hand, after successfully graduating from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Dušan got his first job in Germany, and then he worked in China and now in Australia.
– Business success is if you do a job that fulfills you, you are surrounded by people you trust and who trust you, with whom you work well and spend time together. How do you get there? A person must be honest with himself and find out which job fulfills him and what he could do, and not be guided by other criteria, such as money or status.
It is the technical part of the job in the automotive industry, which he is now dealing with, that is the most challenging for Dušan.
– It suits me better to deal with mechanical problems that I can solve, than psychological ones that exist if you run a team or an entire company, as I used to do. This way I feel much better, as if I am healthier.
The closing of the borders and the impossibility of visiting their loved ones in China and Serbia did not upset the Doshen family.
– We arrived in Australia in 2013, and the reason was simple. We were looking for the most adequate place to live and educate our daughter Ana. Locking the borders prevented us from physically seeing our families in China and Serbia. But I’m not particularly depressed about it. It’s nice enough here, and the impossibility to go somewhere was compensated by the fact that the three of us spend more time together. We are more aware of each other than we would otherwise be and I have built an even better bond with my family. Even when it’s lockdown and we can’t go further than five miles from home, it’s not scary because the beach is so far away from us.
Dušan adds that the time he was “given to spend with his family” is the best thing that could have happened to him.
– True, we have the happy circumstance of living in a house, having a small yard, and enough space in the house to be alone when needed, and then to gather around a table, a movie or a monopoly.
When asked if he was thinking of returning to Serbia, my interlocutor paused significantly.
– Not really. My family is international. My wife is from China, I am from Serbia. We are better on some neutral ground. My daughter Ana is Australian, I wanted to say that or not, but that’s right. I see how he thinks, how he talks, how he behaves. She is both Chinese and Serbian, but also Australian. She has a place here, at least for now. And what she will do later, let her decide for herself. Jan and I are doing quite well here.
Dusan believes that the situation in Serbia could be initiated, but says that “there is simply no appetite to deal with it.
– Especially because I know what the economic and political atmosphere is like. I spent a lot of time protesting, I lost my health and years of studying because of that, thinking that I could change something. It was not a disappointment, but a realization that you are just an ant in the system, and the only thing you can do is raise yourself and the people around you, and if you succeeded, well done! It is much more important to make your microcosm properly, than to try to correct the curves of the Drina – Dušan Došen will honestly say.
Family happiness
When asked what happiness is for him, Dušan answers without a shred of dilemma.
– Happiness is when there is no problem that cannot be solved within the family, when there is relaxed and clear communication between everyone in the family, and that everything can be solved with a smile.
Success in music
– Success is when you play with true professionals in Shanghai and they don’t kick you off the stage, they think you’re great. It is better when you are successful in this business, they recognize you as a musician. I avoided playing for money and maybe that would be my biggest failure in music – says Dušan.
