Today, for the third time in history, Australia should receive the organization of the Olympic Games. A session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be held in Tokyo this Wednesday, on the eve of the beginning of this year’s Games, at which the host of 2032 should be announced.
It has long been known that Brisbane is the only candidate recommended by the IOC Executive Board as a “desirable host of the Games”, so only a great miracle could ruin the account of the capital of Queensland.
This is the first time in the history of the Games that the host is chosen in this way, which is a change that was voted on at the IOC session in Lausanne 2019.
It was then decided to initiate an “ongoing dialogue” with all cities that express official interest in the organization, and that after that process, on the recommendation of the Executive Board, one (or several) interested parties be elected, with whom a “targeted dialogue” is conducted. if they meet the conditions, they receive the status of “desirable host”.
Through this process, only Brisbane came up with a concrete plan and that is why he was determined as the only candidate. If it goes as expected, the third largest Australian city will win the Games and thus become the first host in history to organize the world’s largest sports festival as a region.
Namely, the candidacy envisages that the competitions, in addition to Brisbane, will also take place on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, which will essentially make the entire southeastern Queensland host the Olympics.
Due to this decision, a whole group of Australian politicians and officials went to Tokyo in the past few days. The delegation is headed by the Federal Minister of Sports Richard Colbeck, the President of the Australian Olympic Committee John Colbeck and – the Prime Minister of Queensland Anastasia Palashchuk. It was her departure that raised the most dust on the Australian political scene, but also among ordinary citizens.
Namely, in recent months, Palashchuk was the biggest advocate of drastically reducing the quota on the number of returnees from abroad, in order to help stop the spread of the corona virus. However, now she has decided to travel, and when she returns, she will have to go to the hotel quarantine for 14 days, outside the existing quotas. Meanwhile, some 34,000 Australians are still waiting for permission to return home.
Due to this move of the Prime Minister, a petition was launched to ban her travel, which was signed by more than 130,000 Australian citizens. Federal Minister of the Interior Karen Ednruz made fierce accusations against Palashchuk.
– We are witnessing the hypocritical behavior of the Prime Minister, who is so in favor of reducing the number of visits to the country, and now she is going abroad. Australians do not like such hypocrisy at all and she will have to face it someday – said Andrews.
The Minister added that she is aware that the Olympic Games are important for Australia and Queensland, but she emphasized that Palaschuk was able to make a final presentation via video link, as many important meetings have been held since the beginning of the pandemic.
The opposition in Queensland is also wondering who will pay for the Prime Minister’s quarantine upon his return, and Palashchuk responds to all this by saying that she was asked to come to Tokyo and “push Brisbane’s candidacy”.

Stop Melbourne and Sydney
Australia hosted the Olympics for the first time in 1956, when Melbourne hosted them. After 44 years, they were held in Sydney in 2000, and those Games are still unofficially considered the best in history.

In addition to Brisbane, the Indian city of Ahmedabad, the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, as well as the capital of Qatar, Doha, have officially expressed interest in the 2032 Olympics.
From Europe, they were Madrid (Spain) and the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which planned to organize the Games in as many as 13 cities, including Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Cologne, Aachen, Duisburg and Bonn.
However, none of these candidates was given the opportunity for a “targeted dialogue” with the International Olympic Committee.
