Serbs who’ve traveled the planet (2): On the verge of demise within the Mentavaj tribe

News

Adventurer and adventurer Andrej Maričić regrets that he was not born at least 150 years earlier, when the modern world was just beginning to get to know the other, wild and untouched side of the planet. As he says, only a few had the privilege of exploring tribes that still lived like their ancient ancestors. Although there are far fewer of them today and it is very difficult to reach them, Maričić manages to find them and record their life, culture and customs with the lens of a camera.

He lived with the Indonesian Mentawai tribe and the Tanzanian Bushmen, and he will never forget that precious experience.

Mystical Africa

Andrej recently returned from the Black Continent, which he says is his favorite.

– The place where it all started. Mystical. Wild. Primordial. And during this unfortunate pandemic, I managed to go to two African islands, Unguja and Pemba, where I was convinced that there is still a real Africa as I saw it in movies as a child. It was also productive as far as filming is concerned, so viewers will be able to get to know that real Africa on H1 television and my YouTube channel from the fall – says Maričić.

This adventurer and adventurer has visited breathtaking landscapes, but also dangerous and less attractive ones that few people enter. He researched Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Tanzania, Morocco, South Africa, Cuba…

– Every place, moment or event leaves a special impression on me. If I could choose the best experience it would definitely be with the Mentawai tribes in Indonesia and the Bushmen in Tanzania. First of all, because of their specific and unique way of life, which will unfortunately disappear in the years to come – says Andrej, who learned valuable lessons while living in the wild.

The philosophy of the tribe, he says, comes down to one thing in common – to survive until the next day.

– They are not attached to the material, they live for the moment, they are fair, honest and what fascinated me the most is the uncorrupted in relation to us from civilization. Their family is everything and there are no exceptions among any tribe – says Andrej.

They don’t know about greed

The way tribes survive is cruel to many, but their perception is completely different.

– What is unusual for us “civilized” is an integral part of life. They live that way because they have to, they have no choice and they will take from nature as much as they need to survive. On the other hand, could we, like you, call ourselves “civilized”, say something like that about ourselves, or is the reality such that our greed for the material exceeds every limit – states the interlocutor of “Vesti”.

On his travels, he faced numerous challenges and dangers.

– In the Mentavaj tribe on the isolated island of Siberut in the middle of the Indian Ocean, I was poisoned by drinking insufficiently boiled water from a jungle stream infected with a rare bacterium found in the feces of a wild boar. The situation was so serious that the shaman could not lower my fever for several days, I could not get up, I ate, I was so weak that when they realized that it would not end well, they somehow brought me through the jungle to the boat and transported me after a few hours the first settlement where I got medicine and an infusion and got out. Two years later, I returned to the same place, lived with them for 30 days in the jungle and made, for sure, the best series so far. People are so attached to the Mentavaj tribe that it is a matter of days when I will return again among the friends I have gained for the rest of my life – Andrej tells about his experience in this tribe.

Defy the pandemic

– I did not use the forced break due to the pandemic to tour Serbia because I did it in detail seven years ago through the series “Life with Nature”, but to explore the countries that are in the plan of filming. As soon as the opportunity arose I was on a flight to Africa. As always, I have a lot of help from the Manga Trip agency, with which I have been cooperating from the very beginning – says Maričić.

The call of the wilderness

The chance to do what he loves was given to him by the victory in the first reality show “VIP Survivor”.

– After the victory in the Philippines in 2010, the idea that I was thinking about years before, could finally be realized. However, I waited a few more years to prove to TV companies that the “Without Borders” project has a perspective. After many slammed doors and a thousand “no”, I finally got a chance thanks to Aleksandra Subotic, CEO of United Media Group, who from the very beginning had faith in what I do and this cooperation has been going on successfully for seven years, and the series Without Borders with Andrej ”is broadcast on H1 television. The path to realization was as difficult as life itself, which did not caress me in the least, but with my persistence and stubbornness, not listening to anyone’s advice but only my heart, I came to what I always wanted – says Andrej.
