FOR STRONGER CONNECTIONS BETWEEN SERBIA AND RUSSIA: Kikinda could have a Russian nook within the Cultural Heart

The director of the Russian House in Belgrade, Yevgeny Baranov, visited Kikinda today with his associates, when he met with Mayor Nikola Lukac and a member of the City Council for Culture and Education, Milena Zivkov, in the local government building. The interlocutors announced that the strengthening of the unbreakable ties between the two fraternal peoples in Kikinda will be raised to a higher level.

– We came to Kikinda to improve the cooperation between the two fraternal peoples and to establish a stronger connection between the local self-government and the Russian House in Belgrade. As an institution, we cover 12 areas, and the largest cooperation with Kikinda will be in the field of education and culture. We have more than 60 representative offices all over the world, but this in Serbia stands out in many ways. First of all, it is the oldest representation and the most important – pointed out the director of the Russian House, Yevgeny Baranov.

The attempt to return the Russian language to primary and secondary schools, as was the case in the past, was the main topic of today’s meeting, said the mayor of Kikinda, Nikola Lukac.

– Together with the Russian Home and the Embassy of the Russian Federation, we will try to find a solution so that children can choose the Russian language in schools. We plan to create a Russian corner in the Kikinda Cultural Center that would represent the tradition, culture and customs of Russia, nurture the traditional connection of Slavic peoples and strengthen the unbreakable ties between the Russian Federation and Serbia. We will also start establishing ways for some primary and secondary schools to find partners in Russia and start exchanging students, nurturing the culture, tradition and brotherly warmth of the two peoples, “Lukac said.

Kikinda is one of the bastards in Serbia who has always nurtured friendship with Russia by organizing the traditional two-day manifestation “Days of Russia in Kikinda”. A rich cultural, artistic and spiritual program is led by metropolitans, bishops, clergy and monks of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as state officers and soldiers, historians and artists. Then it is obligatory to visit the Russian cemetery in Kikinda.

– Our friendship dates back to antiquity. Serbia accepted our compatriots who were in a difficult situation after the October Revolution of 1917 and were treated here like nowhere else in the world, as the most born. Thanks to that, a large Russian community appeared in Serbia – says Baranov.

According to him, about 2,000 Russian citizens were registered in Serbia, as he claims, that number is certainly higher, because they have no obligation to register with Russian state institutions, so that is the reason why their exact existence does not exist. According to the census, there are about 3,500 Russians in Serbia who are Serbian citizens or descendants of those who arrived after the October Revolution.
