Unbelievable Serbia within the semifinals of the European Championship, Spain is left with no medal
A truly epic match was played between Serbia and Spain in the quarterfinals of the European Championship. In the end, after an additional five minutes, the Serbian girls won 71:64 and will fight for medals in the continuation of the tournament.
Spain was the favorite in this match. Mondel’s team is a two-time consecutive continental champion, while the match was played on their field, in Valencia.
However, none of that was important to Marina Maljković’s team, who returned from the result lag, suffered the referee’s help to the rival, left everything behind and played the best when it was most important.
In a very even match, the biggest advantage was six points, and Spain gained it on several occasions. However, Serbia had a ready answer at all times and brought the match to an uncertain end.
Spain had an advantage of 61:55 two and a half minutes before the end, and then the hellish end of the Serbian team followed, which reached a turning point and a lead with a series of 7: 0.
And then one, to put it mildly, incredible court decision, which is simple for the Spanish team donated two free throws per second and a half to the end.
Fortunately, Uvinja hit only one free throw, so the match went into overtime.
In the additional five minutes, there was only one team on the field – the Serbian team. Excellent defense and a few smart decisions in attack kept the advantage throughout the extra time.
And when Nevena Jovanović hit a three-pointer for a maximum of plus seven about 10 seconds before the end, it was clear that the Serbian team would make it to the semifinals.
The most efficient in the Serbian team was Sonja Vasić with 19 points, Yvonne Anderson added 17, and Nevena Jovanović 15.
In the Spanish team, Uvinja scored 14, Ndur 12, and Cazorla 11.
This is Serbia’s first victory over Spain in major competitions, after five consecutive defeats.
Serbia will play against Belgium in the semifinals on Saturday, while Spain was left without a medal.
