Dr. Emilija Nestorović, cardiologist and head of the Department for Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Heart Support of the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery of the Clinical Center of Serbia, said that it was clear to her on the basis of which the Constitutional Court recently challenged the provisions of the law on organ transplantation.
– The law was copied from successful countries and works great in more than 20 countries. But because of the mentality of our people, the so-called soft consent, which means that the family decides whether their member will be able to be a donor. This means that although someone has not declared in their lifetime that they do not want to be a donor, the family gives the final word. In the USA, Germany, Canada, citizens declare whether they want to be donors and if they want, the family is not asked. All this that is happening with the provisions of the Constitutional Court will have a negative impact on transplants if it is not resolved soon – Dr. Nestorović told the media.
Leading countries in the number of transplants, such as Spain and Croatia, which have more than 40 donors per million inhabitants, once went through similar situations, so, says the doctor, it is expected that in time we will overcome these “diseases” and obstacles in society.
