Most car brands have long since started electrifying and phasing out internal combustion engines. Still, it looks like Audi will make the fastest transition and offer exclusively electric models.
Audi announced earlier that they had completely stopped developing internal combustion engines, and now they have surprised everyone with the announcement that as of 2026, they will not offer cars with such engines at all.
According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the president of Audi, Markus Dusman, announced to other company executives on Thursday that the gradual abolition of models with SUS engines will be implemented by 2026.
Interestingly, this report points out that from that year, Audi will not even offer hybrid models. Clearly, this approach and accelerated electrification are part of the overall plan and strategy of the Volkswagen Group, which is quite radical compared to the approach of other German brands such as BMW and Mercedes.
Although they already have several electric models, their strategy still relies on internal combustion engines, and they are convinced that this will be the case for an even longer period.
Due to the poor availability of rare minerals used in batteries, BMW is concerned that electric models will still be significantly more expensive than conventional models, and do not plan to stop the development of SUS engines at all.
In any case, it is certain that the next decade will be a turning point for the automotive industry, so it remains to be seen who made the right moves at the right time.
