Pounding rain, which has already caused deadly flooding in southern Japan, moved northeast on Wednesday, hitting large swaths of the main Japanese island, swelling more rivers, causing mudslides and destroying homes and streets. At least 58 people have died in several days of the flood, The Associated Press (AP) reported.
On Wednesday morning, parts of Nagano and Gifu in central Japan were flooded by massive downpours. The footage on NHK television showed a swollen river drilling into the dam and destroying a highway, while in the city of Gero the rising river flowed directly under a bridge. A landslide ravaged several houses in a mountain town of Takayama, all of which were safely rescued.
In Kagoshima, a pickup truck was hit by a mudslide and fell into the ocean, but the driver was blown out of the air with a head injury, according to Fuji Television. In another town in Oita, two brothers were dug up alive by rescuers in the 1980s after a mudslide hit their hillside home, NHK said.
