Former Croatian football player Robert Prosinecki recalled the days when he played for Crvena Zvezda and the incident on May 13 at “Maksimir” in Zagreb.
In December, he played for Crvena Zvezda from 1987 to 1991 and joined the Serbian team from Dinamo Zagreb, where he began his football career.
On this day before 1990, the derby of the Yugoslav First League between domestic Dinamo and visiting Red Star was supposed to be played at Zagreb’s “Maksimir”.
The duel between the “blues” and the “red and whites” was supposed to decide on the champion of Yugoslavia, but it turned out that the interruption of that match symbolically announced the beginning of the civil war between Serbs and Croats and the disintegration of the common state.
How does “Yellow” look at it today?
– I’m not ashamed of anything. I have no problem with being in Zvezda, which accepted me as a player and as a coach and with which I achieved success that will be difficult to repeat in this part of Europe. From Zvezda, I went to one of the best clubs in the world – says Prosinecki.
In December 1990, he played for Crvena zvezda and played in a game in Zagreb, which is now famous on May 13.
– You know, we suddenly reached the finals of the Champions League. We beat Bayern, so we came to that Bari and thus became European champions on penalties. It was something unthinkable and I didn’t think about those other things. It was not pleasant in Zagreb, of course it was not pleasant to watch such scenes. Today, when we talk about it, it is a great thing for me that I do not have any problems in Belgrade, Zagreb or Sarajevo. I feel good and some people love me, wherever I go – Robert Prosinecki is clear in an interview for the Croatian “Index”.
