Bring your appetite to this festival.
The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas will hold its “Taste of Serbia” event on Saturday from 12 noon to 5 pm and from 12 noon to sold out Sunday in the church hall, 1001 St. Clair Road, Johnstown.
“This started as a fundraiser that we planned before the spring 2020 pandemic, but it failed,” said Suzette Gardenhour, a member of the church and volunteer at the festival.
“We still wanted to try, so we’re going to do it as a take-out event.”
The menu includes lamb rolls, sarma (stuffed cabbage), cevapi (grilled pork and beef sausage), pita, coleslaw, Serbian beans, palacinka (crepe pancakes), libanica (crispy layered pastries) and Serbian donuts.
“It’s really a taste of ethnic Serbian food,” said Gardenhour.
She said that Church members have been preparing and preparing food for the festival for three months.
“Everything is absolutely delicious,” said Gardenhour.
“The people here love authentic European food and they love to experience very traditional Serbian food.”
She said that Taste of Serbia is one of the first festivals in the region this year and she hopes people will come out to enjoy the food.
“We live by our reputation and are pretty recognizable because our fish fries are just as successful as our other dinners,” said Gardenhour.
“We also attend the Johnstown Slavic Festival and our Cevapi is a big train so of course it’s on the festival menu.”
The proceeds will benefit the church’s operating costs.
