In the event of the continuation of the war in Donbas, the Ukrainian army will find itself in a worse position than in 2014, according to the extraordinary advisor to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Yuriy Butusov.
– Unfortunately, if there is a big war, many things from 2014 will happen again. It is very clear at the front that the state leadership is not paying serious attention to military reforms – said Butusov.
He also pointed out the problems in the justice sector, political and economic system, emphasizing that because of them, the country does not have enough money for what is needed. According to Butusov, there is no doubt that volunteers will have to collect money for the needs of the army.
Butusov also emphasized that the army needs off-road vehicles, night vision devices, thermographic cameras, and the volume of purchases of this equipment remains at a miserable level. The lack of ammunition was added to the problems that existed in 2014. He states that the reason for that was the depletion of stocks during the war years in Donbas and the explosion in warehouses.
Conflict in Donbass
In April 2014, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, which declared independence after the coup in Kiev.
A comprehensive ceasefire in Donbas took effect on July 27 last year. These measures include a complete ban on shooting, deployment of weapons in and near settlements, offensive and reconnaissance and sabotage operations.
Tensions began to rise in the region in late February: the OSCE reported a significant increase in ceasefire violations, and insurgents said the Ukrainian Armed Forces were using artillery in shelling. The self-proclaimed republics believe that Kiev is preparing a large-scale offensive.
In Moscow, they called the current situation dangerous, because a civil war could break out again in eastern Ukraine. As the spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, noted, in these conditions, Russia is taking measures to ensure its security. He added that the movement of troops on the territory of the country should not disturb anyone, because Moscow does not pose a threat to anyone.
