Patriarch of Porphyry
Serbian Patriarch Porfirio said today during his visit to the earthquake-stricken residents of Banija that he is not a politician, but that he will do everything in his new capacity to “blunt all possible blades among people”, and that this tragedy showed that people need each other.
Today, the former Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana visited Majske Poljane and Glina with the Bishop of Gornja Karlovačka Gerasim, in the first visit since the inauguration of the 46th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which he took over in mid-February.
– When we are together, nothing is an obstacle – he told the Kukolec family, the first of five he visited in Majske Poljane. Those from the earthquake live in housing containers.
– We know that this has been only first aid so far, and that everything is yet to be renewed, so – count on us – said Porphyry.
In a message to the residents of Banija affected by the earthquake, the patriarch said that the tragedy showed that people needed each other.
– Maybe God sometimes allows temptation to all of us so that through a kind of material damage we would have the opportunity to awaken in ourselves what is human and to make an effort to overcome some of our narrowness, egoism and closedness. To meet each other and to realize that united we will easily renew the material damage – said the patriarch of Porphyry.
