All of it relies on what sort of air we are going to breathe this winter

Individual fire pits and heavy traffic have been mentioned most often in recent years as the culprits that cause us to breathe hard and that cause applications to light up red every fall and winter. Considering the energy situation in the world, an even worse period is ahead of us. The heating plants are ready to run on fuel oil, which we have been trying to get rid of for the sake of ecology for years. Coal is more expensive than ever, so everything will be burned to keep us warm. How will we breathe then?

Ivana Vilotijević, as a guest in the Belgrade Chronicle, confirmed that the air in Belgrade is currently good, but that it worsens during the winter, as the cause of pollution is individual fireplaces and traffic.

Meteorological conditions are a priority factor

He points out that it must never be forgotten that, when it comes to air quality, the priority factor is meteorological conditions – atmospheric pressure, humidity, as well as wind flow itself.

“So we can’t say what the air will be like during the coming winter, we can’t say what the weather will be like, how the meteorological conditions themselves will affect it. We hope it will be better than we think,” said Vilotijević.

She explained that the meteorological conditions are something that no one can see at this moment, but the impact of individual fires and traffic can only be assessed.

He notes that the analysis was done last year at the time of the fire at the landfill in Vinci and this year in August.

“Based on accredited methods, the analysis of those suspended particles proved that there is no difference between last year’s and this year’s state of air quality. So it is the meteorological conditions that can only worsen the state of air quality, and of course the increase in the number of individual fire pits,” she emphasized. .

She specified that by monitoring meteorological conditions, they will be able to know the quality of the air and that they will inform the public about it in a timely manner.

Recommendations for citizens

Also, she stated that the site beoeko.com for citizens who normally belong to risk groups, there are recommendations on how to behave when air pollution occurs.

In addition, they have the obligation to oblige all directors of public institutions to follow the recommendations of the City Institute for Public Health.

She also pointed out that one of the measures that individuals can take to reduce pollution is to clean chimneys.

As for traffic concentration, she stated, it will be directed according to the existing plans and the existing situation.

“We cannot now say that we will close a street or reduce the number of vehicles, if there is no need for that. There are exact data and we will make decisions based on them,” explained Vilotijević.

As for the most polluted parts of Belgrade – Zemun, Bežanije, Despot Stefana Boulevard – he says that during this year, the highest level of pollution was observed due to ground level ozone, as well as due to meteorological conditions.

She added that ozone has never exceeded the permitted limit and that the inspection has yet to reveal the causes of that pollution.
