Unexpected – the queen
When it is born in Mayfair in 1926, Princess Elizabeth, and her family did not expect that one day she would become the monarch. They thought they would live a relatively “normal”, albeit privileged, life.
But everything changed in December 1936, when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated and her father became king. Thus, ten-year-old Elizabeth became the next heir to the British crown.
Elizabeth and the Second World War
Queen Elizabeth, who died on Thursday, it had a specific role in the events of the war. She addressed Commonwealth children alongside her sister Princess Margaret on the BBC, thanking them for their courage and patience: “We’re trying to do everything we can to help our sailors, soldiers and airmen, and we’re also trying to shoulder our share of the burden. which brings war.”
In 1945 she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, trained as a mechanic and became the first female member of the royal family to join the armed forces as an active member.
Sixth Queen crowned in Westminster Abbey
Elizabeth the Second was crowned on June 2, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. She was the thirty-ninth sovereign, and the sixth queen crowned in that abbey.
The first was Queen Mary I Tudor, who was crowned on October 1, 1553. The Queen’s grandmother Mary of Teck, aged 81, was the first Queen to see her grandchild on the throne, however, she died before the coronation.
Gold and silver threads
The dress the Queen wore to the coronation, designed by British fashion designer Norman Hartnell, was made of white satin and embroidered with the emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth in gold and silver thread.
After her coronation, the Queen wore the dress six more times, including opening parliaments in New Zealand and Australia in 1954.
Seven decades with the queen
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died in 2021, in the 100th year. He was married to Elizabeth for 73 years, and as the husband of the British queen he spent a full 69 years, which is why he is the person who has been married to a British monarch for the longest time.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s relationship began as youthful love at first sight.
The Duke of Edinburgh has helped the royal family to be more present on television instead of radio, and is the first member to do a TV interview.
Invitation for Prince Charles
Prince Charles, who by the death of Elizabeth the Second became King Charles III, was the first child to witness his mother’s coronation as sovereign. Princess Anne did not attend the ceremony because she was “considered too young” at the time.
Prince Charles received a special hand-painted children’s invitation to his mother’s coronation.
