Argentina’s vice president escaped death after the gun that was aimed at her did not fire.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez said the gun was loaded with five bullets, but that the bullet did not exit the barrel when the assassin pulled the trigger.
The assassin was arrested, and another hundred bullets were found in the apartment of a 35-year-old Brazilian.
Authorities have yet to determine the motives behind the attack on Christina Fernandez de Kirchner.
Political leaders around the world condemned the attack, which came amid a major economic crisis caused by the massive inflation the country is facing, as well as the plummeting peso.
The Argentine president’s office called for an end to “rhetoric of hate,” and the president said the attack was the worst since the country returned to democracy decades ago.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner faces corruption charges related to an alleged scheme to divert public funds while serving as president of Argentina from 2007 to 2015.
She denied the charges, but the prosecutor asked for a 12-year prison sentence.
