Mateus solved Neuer’s “debt” to the taxi driver
Taxi driver Azir S. he came into the limelight of the German public after driving the famous goalkeeper in a taxi.
Azir realized that Neuer had lost his wallet with documents, cards and money, found the Bayern goalkeeper and returned his possessions.
He hoped that, as an honest inventor, he would be adequately rewarded for it, but in return he only received a signed Manuel Neuer jersey.
“Manuel Neuer’s name and address were on his ID card. Inside were cards and about 800 euros in cash. The prize is a mockery! I have four children and what should I do with that jersey,” the taxi driver told Bild, adding that he spent 400 euros on fuel alone until he found Neuer’s home.
Lothar Mateus heard the story and made a gentlemanly move. He decided to buy Manuel Neuer’s jersey from Azir for 1,000 euros, and then auctioned it off to raise money for humanitarian purposes.
“I know what it’s like to lose a wallet. There’s a lot of work to do later. New cards, documents. Kudos to him for saving Manuel from more trouble,” said Mateus.
