Rafael Caro Quintero is considered one of the fathers of drug cartels in Mexico.
He is accused of killing DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
In addition, FBI reports place him as one of the heads of the Sinaloa cartel and the founder of the Caborca cartel, Mexico’s Union Calisco reports.
Mexican media reports that Quintero is one of the founders of the Guadalajara Cartel and that the Navy participated in the arrest operation.
The US Department of Justice has offered a $20 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
According to Milenio, Quintero, together with Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, the head of the bosses, and Ernesto Don Neto Fonseca Carilla, founded the Guadalajara cartel in the 1970s, which concentrated the largest distribution and cultivation of drugs in Mexico.
At that time, Kiki Camarena infiltrated the ranks of the Guadalajara cartel and revealed to the DEA the location of Rancho El Bufalo, one of the largest in the criminal organization.
After she was discovered, Kiki Camarena was kidnapped, tortured and killed. A DEA agent was found dead on March 5 in the rural area of La Angostura.
